Know before you drive

Golf cart rules of the road

  • Rentals here are street-legal Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) - top speed 20-25 mph. They must be titled, registered and insured.
  • Florida law (s. 316.2122) allows LSVs only on roads posted 35 mph or less. You may cross a faster road only at an intersection.
  • Drivers must be 16 or older and carry a valid driver's license, just like a car. Many rental companies require the renter to be 21+ (some 26+).
  • Never drive on US Highway 98, including the shoulder. Cross 98 only at signalized intersections.
  • No driving on sidewalks, bike paths or the Timpoochee multi-use trail along 30A.
  • Everyone wears a seat belt, and children need a proper child restraint or car seat, as in a car.
  • Seaside, WaterColor, Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach and some other private communities set their own rules and many prohibit rental carts. Park outside and walk in. Green street signs mean county roads; blue signs mean private roads.
  • If traffic backs up behind you on 30A, pull over to let cars pass. Use headlights at night.
  • Remove the key when parked and keep electric carts plugged in overnight.

Beach know-how

What to know before you go

  • Beach flags: Green = calm; Yellow = moderate surf/currents; Red = high hazard, knee-deep only; Double Red = water closed (entering can mean a $500 fine and possible arrest); Purple = dangerous marine life. Text FLAG to 31279 for current conditions.
  • Leave No Trace: Walton County removes chairs, umbrellas, tents and toys left on the sand from one hour after dusk to one hour after sunrise. Fines start at $100. Take everything back to the house each evening.
  • No glass containers on the beach.
  • Dogs are not allowed on Walton County beaches without a permit, and permits are only for residents and property owners. Leave pets at the house.
  • Tents/canopies must be 10x10 or smaller and set up on the top third of the beach. No charcoal grills; small propane grills only. No overnight camping, no digging deep holes, and don't take sand.
  • Sea turtle nesting season is May 1 - October 31: turn off or shade lights visible from the beach at night, no flashlights or phone lights on the beach (red lights only), fill in holes and knock down sandcastles before leaving, and never disturb nests. Report problems to South Walton Turtle Watch at (850) 362-9501.
  • Beach bonfires require a South Walton Fire District permit (swfd.org/beach-safety/bonfire-permit-request; 850-267-1307). Permit holder must be 18+. Mar-Oct, setup no earlier than 5pm and cleared by midnight (Nov-Feb: 4pm/11pm). Fire must be on a raised pit at least 200 ft from turtle nests and 50 ft from dunes, with a 5lb ABC extinguisher on site. Unpermitted fires carry a $500 fine.
  • Stay off the dunes and sea oats. They are protected, so use the boardwalks.
  • Rip currents are the biggest danger. If caught, swim parallel to shore, then back in. Swim near a lifeguard when possible.
